You need a clean water filter to get fresh, filtered water. We recommend that you replace the water filter every six months. The refrigerator's water filter light will let you know when those six months are up and should be reset after changing the filter.

How long should my Samsung Fridge Water Filter last?
Refrigerator manufacturers strongly recommend that fridge water filters be replaced at least every 6 months or when the "change filter" light comes on. However, if you notice the clarity or taste of your water changing, that's the best indication that it's time for a change! A routine 6 month change-out cycle ensures that your water stays fresh and your refrigerator's ice & water mechanisms are protected from corrosion.
Samsung water filters, using high grade carbon block, help remove numerous substances which may be present in your water such as chlorine, microbial cysts, heavy metals & chemicals - common industrial substances with high toxicities that can infiltrate water source.
Replace the water filter
Note: Whether you have the filter pictured, or the canister style filter located on the back wall of the refrigerator, the method to replace is exactly the same.
You can buy a new Samsung filter on our accessories page. Select a filter, and then select SEE ALL SPECS to see compatible fridge models. SEE ALL SPECS is located right above the Review section. Do not use third-party water filters, which may leak and damage the refrigerator.
• To replace the water filter, turn off the water supply, and then turn the filter counterclockwise while pulling it out (or down).
• Reinstall a new filter by pushing it into place and then turning it clockwise. Make sure the lock icon lines up with the filter housing.
• Turn the water supply back on again, and dispense some water.
• Don't forget to reset the filter light so you can stay on top of your filter replacement schedule.
How will you know when it's time to replace the water filter?
The filter icon will let you know. When the filter is new, the filter light may be blue, yellow, or green, depending on the model. As a reminder, the icon will turn purple when it's almost time to change the filter. After 6 months, the icon will turn red when you need to replace it. Once it's red, change it right away so you can have high-quality water.
The water filter light operates on a timer and will turn on after 6 months. (For models where the indicator is always lit, it will turn red after 6 months.)
Depending on the quality of the water in your area or the amount of water you dispense, you may want to change the filter more or less frequently than the light suggests. To determine if a new filter is needed, dispense water first with the filter installed and then with it removed. If the speed the water dispenses at is significantly different, replace the filter whether the indicator is lit or not.
Typically you will want to reset the indicator when you put a new filter in, or you may want to reset it to make it go away since your filter is still fine. To do so, look closely at your control panel. On most control panels, a Filter Reset button is available, sometimes as the secondary function of another button.
Once located, touch and hold the correct button for 3 seconds until the light resets. The filter icon will either turn off or change back to its normal color when it's reset. This starts the 6 month timer over again.
Note: Some models may require two buttons to be touched simultaneously to reset the light. Touch screen models will use on-screen menus instead. For instructions specific to your refrigerator see your usual manual .
